Use the Acceleration Lane
Use the acceleration lane to build an appropriate speed before entering highway traffic. The goal is to join the flow safely, not stop at the end of the ramp unless traffic conditions require it.
Observe Early
Check mirrors and begin assessing traffic before the merge point. Use a clear blind-spot check before moving into the lane.
Match Traffic Speed
When conditions allow, approach the merge at a speed that lets you enter smoothly without forcing other drivers to brake or make abrupt moves.
Choose a Safe Gap
Look for a gap that gives you enough space ahead and behind. Signal clearly and merge smoothly when the gap is safe.
After the Merge
Cancel the signal, establish a safe following distance, maintain lane position, and continue scanning traffic.
Highway Lane Changes
Before changing lanes, check mirrors, signal, perform a blind-spot check, confirm the gap, and move smoothly into the new lane.
Preparing for the Exit
Identify the exit early, move into the correct lane safely, signal, and reduce speed only after entering the exit lane unless road conditions require otherwise.
